The best VIN report for a used Audi: service history, diesel recalls and equipment

Audi keeps the service record for its cars in the Volkswagen group's central system, and in the myAudi app only the registered owner can see it. This page covers how a buyer gets to see that record, the diesel recalls, the equipment codes and what a paid VIN report adds for an Audi.

In short

  • Audi's service record is digital and shared across the Volkswagen group's authorised workshops. In the myAudi app only the car's registered owner or main user can see it, so the record has to come from the seller.
  • Do not assume a VIN alone opens it. Sites that sell an "Audi dealer history" for a VIN do not name the system their data comes from; ask before you pay.
  • On a diesel, check the recalls. In January 2018 the German KBA ordered a mandatory recall of Audi's 3.0 litre Euro 6 diesels, about 77,600 cars in Germany and 127,000 worldwide.
  • In carVertical's 2025 sample of cars checked by its Polish users, Audi showed rollback evidence in 7.6% of checks, second only to BMW among the five most imported brands.

The Audi service history, and who can open it

Audi does not keep the service record in a booklet any more. Entries go into the Volkswagen group's central system, which every authorised workshop across Audi, Volkswagen, Škoda, Seat and Cupra can read and add to, so an Audi serviced at a Volkswagen partner is still on the same record.

Seeing it yourself is the hard part. Audi shows the service history in the myAudi app, and Audi partners explain that you have to be registered there as the car's owner or main user, a registration the Audi partner sets up. A buyer who does not own the car yet cannot open it.

  1. Ask the seller to open the service history in their myAudi app while you are there, and to let you photograph it.
  2. Or ask the seller to request a printout from an Audi partner. Do not assume a partner will release it to you on the VIN alone.
  3. Compare both with the invoices. An independent garage can record its work in the group system but cannot read the whole history back, so a gap is a question for the seller, not a verdict.

About the sites that sell "Audi service history from the VIN"

Small sites sell an Audi service report for a VIN and nothing else, some within hours, and describe the data as coming from Audi's authorised network or from "manufacturer systems" without naming a system. Audi's own route runs through the registered owner, so ask such a site where its data comes from and how the access is authorised. One of them says itself that its register may not cover work outside authorised workshops or every country. The route that does not depend on that question is the one above: the record the seller opens or requests.

The diesel recalls on a used Audi

In January 2018 the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, the KBA, ordered a mandatory recall of Audi's 3.0 litre Euro 6 diesels in the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, SQ5 and Q7. It had found an illegal defeat device: a warm up strategy that worked only on the test cycle. The KBA put the number at about 77,600 cars in Germany and 127,000 worldwide, fixed with a software update.

The smaller Euro 5 diesels built from 2008 to 2015, 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 litre engines in models such as the A3, A4 and Q5, share the EA189 engine with the Volkswagen models and were recalled for the same software update. Lawyers' summaries also list further KBA orders on V6 and V8 diesels in later years, so do not rely on one headline figure.

Audi recalls: where to look

Like Volkswagen, Audi publishes its recall checks campaign by campaign, for example one for the diesel service actions and one for the Takata airbags, rather than one lookup that lists everything open for a VIN. The German KBA database lists campaigns since 1 May 2004 by model and build period and does not hold every manufacturer measure. For a complete answer on one car, ask an authorised Audi partner to check the VIN. Recall work is free.

Mileage and damage: what the numbers say

Two figures from carVertical, with their scopes attached. Among the five brands most often imported into Poland and checked by its Polish users in 2025, Audi showed rollback evidence in 7.6% of checks, just behind BMW at 7.7% and ahead of Volkswagen at 5.9%. In a separate study covering October 2023 to October 2024, the same company counted an average of 1.83 damage records per Audi report, the fourth highest of the brands it ranked. Both come from the cars its own customers chose to check, which skews towards cars that already looked suspect.

For the car in front of you, collect every dated reading from the service record, the inspection reports and the invoices, and look for the year that does not fit.

The equipment list and what the VIN says

Audi uses the Volkswagen group's vehicle data sticker: the VIN, the engine and gearbox codes, the paint code and a list of three character PR numbers, one for each piece of factory equipment. It sits in the boot, usually in the spare wheel well, and a copy is normally in the service book. Decoded, the PR numbers are the car's factory equipment list, the fastest way to check an advertisement that promises a package.

VIN guides associate the prefix WAU with Audi passenger cars, WUA with the Audi Sport models such as the RS models and the R8, and TRU with cars built in Győr in Hungary. The VIN is under the windscreen, on the door pillar, stamped in the engine bay and in field E of the registration document. All of them should read the same; a mismatch is a reason to walk away.

What the inspection data says about used Audis

In the German TÜV report for 2026, Audi came second of all manufacturers for long term quality: 19.2% of its ten to eleven year old cars failed with significant defects, against an average of 22.9% for that age. The A3, and the A6 and A7, were below the average for their age when young. There are exceptions: the Q5 at six to seven years failed in 16.0% of inspections against 13.6%, and on the A4 and A5 at eight to nine years suspension defects ran at more than twice the average. Judge a used Audi by model and age, not by the badge.

Before you buy a used Audi

  1. Ask the seller to show the service history in myAudi, or to bring a printout from an Audi partner.
  2. Line up every dated reading from the record, the inspection reports and the invoices. They have to rise.
  3. On a diesel, run Audi's VIN check and confirm the update is in the service record.
  4. Check the PR numbers on the data sticker against the advertisement.
  5. Run the free preview at our No.1 pick, and buy the report for the damage records, the photos and the foreign years if it holds something for your car.
  6. Have the car inspected. A cash repair leaves no record for anyone to find.

Questions people ask

Can I check an Audi's service history with just the VIN?

Do not count on it. In the myAudi app the service history is shown only to the car's registered owner or main user, so the record has to come from the seller: on their app, or as a printout from an Audi partner. Ask any site selling an Audi service report for a VIN alone where its data comes from.

How do I know the diesel recall work was done?

Audi's VIN check on its diesel service action pages says whether a car is covered, and the update is recorded in the service record. If the record does not show it, ask an Audi partner before you agree a price.

Is the Audi service record shared with Volkswagen?

Yes. Audi uses the Volkswagen group's central system, so an authorised Volkswagen, Škoda, Seat or Cupra workshop can read and add to an Audi's record. An independent garage can add its work but cannot read the full history.

How do I get the equipment list of an Audi?

Read the PR numbers on the vehicle data sticker in the boot or in the service book. Each three character code stands for one piece of factory equipment, so together they are the car's equipment list as it left the factory.
